{"id":2233,"date":"2022-04-19T07:45:00","date_gmt":"2022-04-19T11:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nsisolution.com\/?p=2233"},"modified":"2023-01-25T14:48:51","modified_gmt":"2023-01-25T19:48:51","slug":"littles-law-managing-fewer-projects-to-deliver-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nsisolution.com\/en\/blog\/littles-law-managing-fewer-projects-to-deliver-more\/","title":{"rendered":"Little\u2019s Law &#8211; Managing Fewer Projects to Deliver More"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"font-size:24px\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nsisolution.com\/en\/team\/vincent-dessureault\/\">Vincent Dessureault<\/a><\/strong>, performance and technology consultant at NSI Solution, explains how to use Little&#8217;s Law in your project management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Manage your projects with less effort<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Are you in charge of a host of projects to deliver and see great earning potential for your organization?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, you may have the impression that the projects are piling up, but the payoffs don&#8217;t seem to follow at the same speed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You realize pretty quickly that the more projects your project team manages simultaneously, the longer it takes to deliver them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You also notice that quality tends not to follow quantity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So is there a way to increase your profits, by delivering more projects, while preserving the same quality, without burning your resources, and without increasing the time to complete each project?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is what Little&#8217;s Law allows us to understand in a project management context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Little&#8217;s Law<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Without wanting to make too many shortcuts, Professor John Little proposed a formula to explain the relationship between work-in-progress (&#8220;WIP&#8221;), production lead time (&#8220;Lead Time&#8221;) and production throughput (&#8220;Throughput&#8221;).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"122\" src=\"https:\/\/nsisolution.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/pasted-image-0-1024x122.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2278\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus, as the average number of projects in progress increases, the average delivery time for each project increases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"179\" src=\"https:\/\/nsisolution.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/pasted-image-0-1-1024x179.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2280\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This formula reveals that the delivery time depends on the work in progress and the production rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Manage your projects with less effort<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now let&#8217;s see how we can reach our solution by applying Little&#8217;s law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s say you want to deliver 4 projects (Green, Yellow, Blue and Red).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-medium is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nsisolution.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/pasted-image-0-2-1024x537.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2282\" width=\"512\" height=\"269\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>So you start by trying to deliver your 4 projects at the same time. So your work in progress (WIP) is 4 projects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You see that it takes you 4 months to deliver all 4 projects. So your Lead Time is 4 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So your Throughput is 4 projects \/ 4 months = 1 project per month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One project per month is good! But your clients are complaining because it took you 4 months to deliver each of their projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So you decide to apply Little&#8217;s Law, to see if you can do better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You then reduce your work in progress (WIP). Instead of doing all 4 projects at the same time, you decide to do them one after the other. This way your work in progress (WIP) is limited to 1 project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You keep the same resources and the same project methodology, so you know that your Throughput remains the same; 1 project per month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So your Lead Time is now 1 project \/ 1 project per month = 1 month.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-medium\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"543\" src=\"https:\/\/nsisolution.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/pasted-image-0-2-1-1024x543.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2284\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In other words, what this means is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You deliver your 4 projects in less than 4 months<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have delivered their project to your clients in 1 month each&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have collected as much profit over this 4 month period<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have received profits from the 1st month<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, what Little&#8217;s Law doesn&#8217;t say is that when your resources have fewer different projects to manage at the same time, they make fewer mistakes and lose less time due to changes.
